The height of the seat was designed in accordance with the height of average wheelchairs, to make it easier to transfer the child from a wheelchair to the tricycle and vice-versa. The side is the most direct way, since it is the most common transfer movement. The wheelchair is stationed alongside the tricycle and its arm support is raised and moved to the side. The steering lever is moved to the front for further access.
The brakes must be locked during transfer for safety reasons. The brake levers are locked by means of small hooks that keep them in place.
Safe use of the tricycle is guaranteed by a safety belt fixed to the seat and back. The shape of the child’s leg support was designed to protect them from leaving the side and touching the wheels. It is made in a material that does not heat up quickly in the sun, which could cause burns without the child noticing. Despite its shape, in some cases it is recommendable for the feet to be secured, depending on the child’s physical disability. There is, therefore, an optional belt that may be fixed to the footrest.
In the case of older children, when their feet are more towards the end of the wheels, it is recommendable to use the bumper. With smaller children, however, the bumper may be discarded to make the Joy-Bike smaller when folded.
The idea of the seat format is to obtain a large an area as possible for the child, so that its weight is evenly distributed to prevent sores (injuries caused by the weight constantly on the same point). The seat has a five-degree slope backward since this gives the child a feeling of security that it will not fall forward. Also for the same reason, the seat is made in rigid material, unlike wheelchairs, providing a better position for the spine and the necessary support for the driving movement.
